Zero-export: keep every watt for yourself
Zero-export means your solar panels never feed power back to the public grid. When your home doesn't need the output at a given moment, your inverter simply produces less.
Why is that needed?
Because once the Dutch net-metering scheme ends in 2027, every kWh you export costs you 60–80% of its value. At the same time, every kWh you consume yourself is worth the full retail rate. So the gap between "feeding back" and "self-consumption" becomes enormous.
An example:
- Your panels produce 3 kW
- Your home is using 500 W at that moment
- Surplus: 2.5 kW
Without zero-export: those 2.5 kW go onto the grid for a fraction of the price. With zero-export: CyberEMS tells your inverter to produce 2.5 kW less (or routes it to your battery, or switches on your dishwasher). Result: zero export, minimal loss.
Is zero-export new?
No — large commercial installations have done this for years. What's new:
- That it now becomes economically important for homes too.
- That you don't have to buy separate hardware — CyberEMS talks directly to your existing inverter (SolarEdge, Enphase, Growatt, GoodWe, Huawei, and more) via its API or Modbus.
How does it work technically?
In broad strokes:
- Measure: we read your smart meter (P1 port) live — ~1 reading per second.
- Decide: if grid import threatens to drop below 0 W (= export), we calculate how far your inverter needs to throttle back.
- Control: we send a setpoint to your inverter. Within 1–2 seconds production is lower.
- Validate: we check that it worked, and log the reading for reporting.
Nobody notices a thing. The lights stay on, the fridge keeps running. Your inverter simply produces exactly as much as your home needs.
What about my battery?
Zero-export and a battery work together perfectly. CyberEMS first fills your battery, then charges your heating or EV systems, and only once all those "consumers" are full does it throttle the inverter back. So discarded production is a last resort, not a default.
