Dutch net metering ends in January 2027

For years, Dutch households with solar panels have benefited from net metering ("saldering"): every kilowatt-hour you fed back to the grid was cancelled out one-for-one against your consumption. Export 2,000 kWh and consume 2,000, and your energy company pays you nothing — and you pay nothing either.

What is going to change

From 1 January 2027 that statutory scheme ends. Your panels keep producing; what changes is what you get for the power you feed back.

What this means in practice

An average solar household feeds ~30–40% of its yearly production back to the grid, because consumption and production don't line up (the sun shines during the day, you use power in the evening). That share is about to lose 60–80% of its value.

How to protect yourself

The solution is simple to write down, hard to execute: consume as much of your own solar output as possible. That means:

  1. Run appliances when the sun is shining — washing machine, dishwasher, heat pump, EV charger.
  2. Install a battery that stores during the day and discharges in the evening.
  3. Throwing away surplus beats giving it away — a zero-export system simply tells your inverter to produce less the moment your home doesn't need the power.

Point 3 feels counter-intuitive but is crucial: without zero-export you subsidise the grid for free.
